“The Group of 77 and China (G-77) is essential to mobilize the political will to promote sustainable development, said today UN Secretary General.” During the ceremony in which Argentina transferred the chairmanship of that group in Algeria, Ban Kid-moon stressed the commitment that all countries have continued to multilateral ism and joint work in the current environment of financial and social crisis.
Ban urged the G-77 to maintain this spirit in international forums to be held this year in order to find solutions to major global challenges like climate change and development.
“We need to design strategies that promote global sustainability. Interconnect need policies that respond to the challenges. The solutions to a problem must be solutions to all problems. The leadership of the G-77 is vital to ensure that concrete steps be taken in Rio, “Ban said, referring to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development at Rio +20.
He added that it is time to make a final effort to achieve the Millennium Development Goals, which rise the halving of extreme poverty and hunger by 2015, and expressed their commitment to continue working with the G-77 for this purpose.
